What’s New in Fitness

Board Meeting

Surfing is one of the fastest-growing trends in fitness.  According to the American Council of Exercise, board sports, including surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding, are growing massively in popularity.  Darren Burrett, from the surfing school Surf South West in North Devon, says twenty-and thirtysomethings are taking to the waves in droves.  “The majority of beginners who come along are young professionals, looking to learn something new, escape the city and get some fresh air," says Burrett.  “And because surfing is so addictive they come back again and again." It’s one of the main reasons the sport has grown so much in the last few years.  In America, the burgeoning popularity of surfing among young women has even spawned a new magazine, Surfing Girl, for those who hanker after the beach lifestyle.

The anticipation of waiting for the right waves to come along – and the thrill of standing up for the first time – make surfing hugely absorbing and great fun.  But the stupendous workout you’ll unwittingly get along the way is another reason that once they’ve, er, taken the plunge, a lot of surf chicks keep coming back for more.  “It’s a total body workout," adds Burrett, “Paddling out gets your heart rate up and focuses on the upper body workout, while catching the wave and springing to your feet involve short bursts of power and builds strength in the lower body."

As an aerobic activity, surfing rates just behind cross-country skiing and distance running.  And, another plus, it’s twice as cool!
