Surfers Mast Waves Within Hours

The sixth-formers of Gillingham School enjoyed activity days around Britain on 29th and 30th June.

Events following AS-Level exams included paint balling, cultural trips around London and surfing, and provided an excellent opportunity for the pupils to broaden their horizons.

For those involved in the surfing, there was a disturbing early arrival at the school for seven o’clock to set off on the three-hour journey to Croyde in North Devon. The secluded bay had surf shops and laid back cafes right on the beach. The sun was out and the surf was up, and the group donned wetsuits and headed for the beach.

Surfer Andy, who one female member of the group described as “wow", demonstrated the basics and by mid-morning everyone could stand on their boards after catching a wave.

Surfing proved a highly popular choice and many expressed regret at not choosing this for both activity days. Tash Locke even enjoyed the surfing despite her fear of the sea. “I loved it," she said. “I wasn’t even worried about the undertow that could have drowned me, or the jelly fish that could have paralysed me. It was so much fun."

Charlie Teesdale said: “It’s easy to see how people become addicted to surfing, you get a real buzz from it. However, do be prepared for aching arms the next day."

Exhausted Muscles were the only downside to the trip, which was such a success that it has inspired some participants to revisit the area.

This activity is set to be a permanent fixture in the school calendar, and there is talk of making it a two-day camping and surfing trip.

" I just wanted to officially thank you for a brilliant week at the surf school. All the instructors are really top guys and it was so much more than I'd expected. Sometimes extreme sports environments can be very clique-ey and intimidating, but I found everybody really welcoming and friendly, which was brilliant, as I was there on my own. I can't wait to come back down for another bash at it! "
