Surf School on a Crest of a Wave
A North Devon surf school is riding high after becoming the first in the country to gain a top-notch award.
Surf South West at Croyde has just been awarded Level 4 status by the British Surfing Association. The school has been BSA-accredited throughout its nine-year existence - school founder and senior instructor Darren Burrett said it was almost the equivalent of a hotel being given a five star rating.
"Level 4 is the highest level attainable and awarded following a thorough assessment of coaching standards, qualifications and professionalism," he added. The BSA introduced a rating system following an explosion in the popularity of surfing and a proliferation of schools around the country. Surf South West has schools at both Croyde and Saunton beaches. And a busy season is looking for instructors.
"A mix of visitors and local people use the school," said Darren. "Many local youngsters are becoming surfers and parents like tio make sure they have the best possible start and learn basic techniques before trying it on their own."
