UK Surf Courses: Why is Surfing so addictive?
"I could not help concluding that this man felt the most supreme pleasure while he was driven on so fast and so smoothly by the sea," wrote Captain Cook upon his first encounter with surfing in Hawaii. Since Cook's sighting in 1777, many aspects of surfing have changed but the essence and feeling of riding a wave is exactly as experienced by those ancient Hawaiian kings.
If you have ever ridden a wave, you will know that surfing is one of those unforgettable experiences and, for many, a life changing moment. Suddenly priorities change and you find yourself exploring new places, surfing new beaches, meeting new people.
Surfing is addictive: just ask any of our surf instructors who all have a genuine enthusiasm for the sport. For us, the next best thing to riding a wave is teaching our skills to someone else, sharing the thrill and watching the exhilaration experienced as a student realises they are becoming a surfer.
Whether you want to catch your first wave, are taking your surfing to the next level, or want to enjoy a surf holiday in the sun, Surf South West have been the UK surf courses leading providers since 1996. Visit us and we'll help you to understand our passion for surfing!
We are the first surf school in the UK to be awarded level 4 status by the British Surfing Association. This is the highest level attainable and is awarded in recognition that Surf South West has the highest standards of surfing coaching.
We have two surf schools operating on North Devon's beaches, our original beach side surf school at Croyde Bay and our Saunton Sands surf school just steps from the sand of Saunton beach. Only 45 minutes from the M5, our North Devon surfing beaches are the closest in the South West to London, the Midlands and the North of England. Our spectacular Atlantic coastline is renowned for excellent surf, bays of golden sand and breathtaking scenery. Both beaches enjoy a famed reputation for the consistency of the surf, warmed by the Gulf Stream.
